Once a year, whether we like it or not, we are blessed with a visit from our district Governor. It is fair to say that the assembled throng, this year, liked it. District Governor Ron Gin from the Rotary club of San Francisco Chinatown grew up in San Francisco. After high school he enlisted in the "all voluntary" Army and was honorably discharged with the rank of e- 5 specialist 5/Sergeant. His degree from City College of San Francisco resulted in employment as an x-ray technician specializing in CT and MRI scanning. He became chief technologist, VP of operations, then regional sales manager. He also completed a BS at San Francisco State and an MBA in finance from the College of Notre Dame in Belmont. In 1998 he made a career change and he has since been with Morgan Stanley as a Certified Financial Planner. He is a charter member of the Rotary club of San Francisco Chinatown and was the charter President elect. During his year as president, 2009 – 2010, the club won the Best Small Club in District 5150. He has 2 adult children, a granddaughter, and he enjoys hot rods, golf, cycling and Rotary. His partner, Liz, is the president elect of the Rotary club of San Francisco Chinatown.

Ron seems to enjoy all things Star Wars, or is it Star Trek, I am so easily confused. His district pin features a Star Trek motif. Ron touted his new Governor's Bell award which will go to the club that he identifies is doing something stupendously wonderful and new and exciting. He acknowledged Warren for his participation at President-Elect Training and Assistant Governor, our own Mitone Griffiths, who he identified as part of the Rebel Alliance. He told us about the new district directory, he promoted the District Foundation and of course the District Conference on May 4 which will have a Star Wars theme. He talked to us about Ian Risely's theme as the president of Rotary International which is "Rotary making a difference". He spoke about every Rotarian planting a tree by World Earth Day and he noted that Paul Harris planted a tree in Australia. He showed us a video promoting Rotarians as "people of action". Ron pointed out that the number one focus of Rotary international remains ending polio. In the 1940s there were a thousand new cases a day and in the last year there were only 10 new cases. The polio plus program was created in 1985 with the goal of celebrating success at the Rotary Centennial. He told us that at a cost of $1.6 billion, 2.5 billion children had been inoculated. Presently, Rotary has been challenged by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to raise an additional $50 million, which the Gates foundation will match with $100 million.

On a district level our foundation donations go to a number of programs including Shelter Box USA, Rotaplast/Alliance for Smiles, Roots of Peace, Mines to Vines (currently applying for a global grant), H2Open Doors (a self-contained water cleansing unit), Rotaract, Interact and Youth Exchange. The district will be sponsoring Lisa Stark, RN as a Global Scholar. The district will be conducting the Potential Rotary Leaders Seminar (PRLS).

Ron told us a personal story about how Rotary helped him establish a bond with his daughter. Ron led a club mission to Guatemala to build a "bottle school" and his daughter came along as a volunteer and that experience brought them closer.

Ron told us a little bit about our club. We were chartered in 1976 and sponsored by Pacifica and San Mateo. Our first Rotary female was Dr. Joy Enriquez, who joined the club shortly before Rotary international dropped the proscription against women in Rotary. Our small club has produced two district governors. Our demographics are perfect, 50-50 male/female. 34 of our 44 Rotarians are Paul Harris Fellows. 25 members of the club are Rotary Direct contributors, which is the highest percentage in the district.

Ron concluded by pointing out that we "join for service and stay for fellowship and fun". He then showed us a slide presentation that had been set to music and personalized to depict our club engaged in Rotary activities over the last year. This was very well received.

Charise McHugh was able to get a dinner for ten at Dee Harley's Goat Dairy as a silent auction item for our next major fundraiser.
Kevin O'Brien said that there is need now for Rotarians to bring their checks for donations to the District 5150 RI  Foundation raffle. He noted that Rotary Direct is doing an amazing job, and that Half Moon Bay Rotarians' contributions work out to about $750 per month for the RI Foundation.
Mitone Griffiths reminded the club of the Oct. 21 District 5150 RI Foundation event, and encouraged members to carpool to it. She also mentioned an event focusing on human trafficking, coming up from 6 to 8 p.m. on  Oct. 25 in San Francisco, and that she was also collecting signups for that.

President Warren then invited Chairs of Club Committees to introduce themselves and their committees. Community Services Director Shana "Rusty" Reilly-Pond took a Rotary Minute to say that the dictionaries for local third-graders had been ordered, and she also mentioned the free community breakfast ongoing for eight years now and how glad and thankful local people were to see Rotary answering this need. Youth Services Director Mary Rogren said that she and John Evans had recently attended an Interact meeting, and urged Rotarians to continue getting involved with community activities.

Exchange Students Louise and Rafa then spoke about their recent activities here on the Coastside. Louise said that friends were going to help her celebrate her birthday this weekend, and that she planned to take part in a tennis match today. She also updated her academic life: she is involved in leadership class and AP English classes. John Evans spoke up then about Louise's tennis skills, noting that in a recent match against Mills High School, she had helped her doubles team, which had never won a match, to get the win.
Rafa gave a lighthearted story about his recent appointment to get his hair trimmed, participating in a water polo tournament and going shooting (clay pigeons, that is) the day before with Mary Rogren and her son. He also described the experience of being in the mosh pit at a recent concert; Mary said she'd wanted to join him there though that did not happen.

Reminder – Pumpkin Festival is coming!!!surprise President-Elect Paul Wrubel spoke about signups for Pumpkin Festival shifts, now a mere two weeks away; and mentioned that we need canisters of gas to heat the chowder. Each member needs to sign up for two shifts.  He is very happy with all the support he is getting with the coordination of the event.  Everyone needs to participate at the preparation evening on Friday, October 13th at 5pm.  So save the dates (OCTOBER 15, 16, and 17) and plan to be there or pay up. Sign up early and often to get the shifts that you want.

Then Assistant Governor Mitone Griffiths introduced the program speaker: District 5150 District Governor Ron Gin.
