Program: SHOP TALK -
SHANA 'RUSTY' REILLY-POND
On her first year anniversary with Rotary, and although intimidated by following Irwin's Shop Talk last month, our plucky speaker ventured forth.
Mundane facts:
- 1st nickname. Sissy, it's a Southern thing
- Fav color is peach, although peach fuzz makes her skin crawl
- Fav food is ice cream
- Fav song is Maggi May & she knows all the lyrics
- She's a cat whisperer
- Has an adventurous spirit and did bungee jump
She likes to read, jog, work out in the gym, cook, word games, cribbage... Can't say no to volunteering, but would cheerfully say no to gassing the car and taking out the garbage cans...
Thirty-five years ago as a HS Senior (17), Shana got first job as a teller. Although she couldn't balance at first, she finally got the hang of it. She worked at Security Pacific, she cut her teeth there and became a branch manager at 27. She was ready to become a stewardess and start at United, but a timely promotion confirmed that banking was for her. She went through the infamous banking mergers, endured the indignity of interviewing for her current job and later moved to Great Western--a word of advice, don't move just for money, she got great sales training there. Tried mortgage brokerage and moved to Lompoc. She bought her first home, then went back to banking at Wells Fargo, supermarket banking that is. Imagine talking about equity loans in the cookie aisle! It turned out to be a good opportunity. She later got to open a real branch, with the stage coach! She later crossed the parking lot to join Home Savings, which was taken over by Washington Mutual which turned out to be a great place to work. She transferred to Golita and endured a 100 mile commute. Along with many of us in banking, she waited with baited breath as Y2K rolled around and everything turned out to be okay.
After several years in a long-distance relationship with Chris, she moved to Half Moon Bay, packing her 3 bedroom house into his 1 bedroom condo. She worked for Warren for a minute at WFB. Since she has a passion for fashion, she went to work for Nordstrom and got recruited by Ann Taylor. Low pay and a penchant for steering her into management led her to leave retail. She moved to Provident Credit Union, no she isn't a proponent, they should be taxed like banks. There was a foray into financial services, she got her series 6, 63 and insurance license. Nice work, but she missed having a team. This brings us to First National. The organization was unknown to her, as it turns out, it was the right fit. It's a community bank, has twelve offices (including Pescadero) and encourages community involvement.
Shana has been involved with all kinds of service organizations. Rotary is a good fit for her; Mariners Community Church is an organization she can't say no to; also near and dear to her is Relay for Life--she is going to chair next year. She's a new Chamber ambassador and hopes to be more involved in the Chamber in the future.
Shana and Chris adopted his 12-year-old niece after a death in family. They just celebrated their "family anniversary". According to Shana, "We owe it to all concerned to bring our essential self into everything."
