Program: District 5150 DG Jeri Fugimoto's VISIT
”Rotary Serving Humanity”- 2016-2917 Rotary International Theme
Our speaker was Jeri Fujimoto, District Governor of District 5150. Various club members read aloud “things to know about Jeri”, including, She brings the light of a thousand suns wherever she goes, exemplifying what Rotay is all about”
Mary Bates, her Asst. Governor, shared that Jeri has a strong commitment to youth, has been instrumental in building the youth development center in San Carlos. “Another exciting thing about Jeri, is that she has a wonderful husband. One of her strongest talents is building relationships, her son Jonathan is getting married soon.” Jeri is someone you want to know .
Jeri thanked her for her wonderful introduction. She then asked us to repeat after her a Japanese phrase- "Hadaka no tuskiai". which means "naked we are all the same.
She shared that because in Rotary we are all the same. Recently, she attended a Rotary event, where some Chinese Rotarians refused to walk in and sit down - in the Chinese language the number 4 and the word for death are similar. They had been assigned to a double death table. At another event, Rotarians from all over the world, different ages, traditions, etc., but we are similar in our love of humanity.
So who is valuable in our district? A lot of clubs have a back table, where all seasoned Rotarians sit, show up, complain a little, and revel in their past. Question: Yes, we do need vibrant young Rotarians, but we also need seasoned Rotarians, because they have committed 40, 50, 60 years of their lives, living the motto. We need to value our older members who often feel left behind with all the changes occurring before us. She encourage us to attend the Legacy event on October 8th. where there will be a champagne reception and dinner, honoring our special members.
District 5150 is sponsoring a boat cruise in Europe in March. This will be a centennial cruise, floating party boat, by Ama Waterways. All are invited.
Jeri mentioned that she was blown away by our milestones, all the years and all the service that members of our Club have done. (Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay has been in existence for 45 years with a major commitment to education.) She said that our club is amazing, vibrant, fun, and she knows President Liz will lead us into a great, great year.
Regarding friendships….a very small club celebrates everything, another club has 200 members, and they don’t know each other very well. She mentioned that she is all about fun. Coming up there will be an event celebrating women in Rotary, on July 30, 5:30-8 p.m. at the Bay Model Visitor Center, in Sausalito. The Rotary of South SF, has decided to pay for the women in their club to attend.
She urged us to support projects that local communities desire, and she used a story from a project that was sponsored by Rotary in the Mayan community. She went on to describe an experience she had working in a tiny little Mayan village, their children were the most important, and the only way to make their lives better, was to educate them, for them to have a small school. On our last day, the village thanked us in their own language. In the Mayan culture, it is unusual to look directly into other people’s eyes, but they all looked at us, eye to eye. She used another example of the Mill Valley Rotary who sponsored a project in Manila.
Jeri announced that the annual District Convention will be held in May, and the theme will be “Importance of Education and Our Children.” They have a strong group of speakers. Another subject will be, “What is the Future of Mobile Apps”. She emphasized that she believes that education is what leads us out of darkness.
She left several items at our tables including: 1) a "Proud Member Rotary sticker; 2) Resource guide; and 3) “Every Rotarian Every Year" information. In addition she talked about the one that shows three books representing the district's commitment to education and the District Banner that shows one area for our district and has no boundaries between the three counties.
The Rotary of San Francisco Chinatown's gift for auction at our club was a beautiful wooden box with many drawers made by an 85 year old Rotarian who wanted to give back to the club. The item was auctioned for $650 and Kevin O’Brien had the winning bid.
President Liz also presented a variety items from our Club to be auctioned at the next club Jeri visits.
