Paul introduced Jamie Weintraub, CEO of Main Street Scholars.  Jamie's key points were:

  • Jamie came to the Coastside 8 years ago to be closer to her daughter and her 4 grandchildren.
  • She took a position at a private school in the city and provided support to her grandchildren
  • Four years ago, her husband almost died from a medical event
  • During this period her grandson “quit school.”  Jamie left her teaching position to be closer home and become a tutor to her grandchildren.
  • Other families asked her to tutor their children and this venture grew to the point she established the non-profit corporation.  She employs what she says are the unemployable:  seniors, parents and graduate students.
  • She and the school has educated and return 31 kids to their schools
  • Thirteen kids are enrolled for the current year.
  • They do SAT/SAT pre-testing and preparation.
  • Parents who have enrolled their kids in the program state family life has improved.
  • They have 125 enrolled in their after-school program.
  • They build confidence in the kids enrolled and relief to families.
  • The school is working to be inclusive, but this is clearly a challenge.
  • They have been a support to the community and are an ardent supporter of the Lift program.
  • She encourages members to come by their office (9-3 in the summer and 9-9 during the school year.
  • The school tuition is $13,600 and their tutoring rates are $75 an hour.
  • She is encouraging community support for this local non-profit which is benefiting the kids and the families in our local area.
Paul thanked Jamie and asked her to sign ten children’s books which will be distributed at Moon Ridge.
