Today's program involved everyone in the club, discussing this year's Magic of the Coastside, which will be around the corner before we know it.
First of all, President Liz talked about the name, "Magic of the Coastside" and how it came about because the entertainment for the first event was a magician, and since the name conveyed something of the tone of the event, it lasted
.

President Liz then talked about a highlight of the event -- the presentation of the Service Above Self award to honor a non-Rotarian, outstanding community volunteer. Dianne Bobko will be sending out information about the award, such as the qualifications for it. Club members will receive nomination forms on which to list honoree suggestions. Discussion followed as to the practice of selecting four finalists, out of which only one receives the award, and whether or not that was appropriate; Eric Shapira suggested that all four finalists should receive an award or some form or recognition. President Liz asked for continued input on the subject.  Nominees cannot be Rotarians, and cannot be employees or paid staff of their organizations, i.e. only volunteers are eligible. And since Rotary is a non-political and non-religious organization, their volunteer work should not be sponsored by a religious or political organization.

Discussion then focused on auction items. Distributed on the tables were "wish lists" of potential auction items that included hotel and travel, entertainment and sports, health, food and wine, home and garden, children and family and artwork. President Liz asked for further donation ideas.
Further discussion touched on the need for items in all price ranges. "Big" items might include things like a Hawaiian-style luau, a sailing excursion, or EJ playing his accordion. Rotarians were asked to think outside the box for possible auction items.
There was also discussion about the club foundation approaching local nonprofits to identify whether they would like or benefit from opportunities to receive funding. Ideas will be welcomed for nonprofits to reach out to with that query. Such groups, though, will have to be 501(c)3-registered nonprofits.
President Liz said she would continue to encourage Rotarians to keep in mind  bringing in good items for auction.
