In view of the time of year we began by talking about about what we did for New Year’s and our resolutions. I learned that in Spain, they eat a grape every second for the last 12 seconds of the old year. Brian can’t trick the kids that 9 p.m. is midnight anymore. Resolutions included spending more with family, making daily resolutions instead...almost everyone doesn’t make resolutions every year. Only 10-20% of resolutions are achieved. Let’s not make resolutions, be resolute. Set goals.
We took a moment to view a video sent by Caroline, last year’s exchange student. It was taken at her Belgium hometown, La Louviere, Rotary Club’s 90th Anniversary. She’s still wearing her jacket! Highlights: our flag on their wall, Caroline’s young mother, her sister and friends, Eric (Club member who visited us last year) will be back in California soon. It was a very swanky event, all of their former exchange students attended. On Caroline - she is studying; misses us; part of her identity seems missing; she will back soon; and she sends us her good wishes. She promises to stay in touch.

Some shared goals...lose weight, stay healthy, be more fit, more face to face visits, stay home more (work from home), work on singing, live a true live, not work so hard, stay in touch with friends, play 9 holes, wake up tomorrow...Teresa shared some regrets we might have if we don’t set some goals! 1. I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. 2. I wish I had not worked so hard. 3. I wish I had the courage to express my feelings. 4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. 5. I wish I had let myself be happier.
We recorded a short video for Caroline.
Have a happy New Year one and all!

Directors' Reports
Community Service
Shana Reilly-Pond thanked Past president Liz Schuck for stepping up to head the team for the Rainy Day Project for the homeless of Half Moon Bay. Monday is the weekday that Rotary helps at the Lutheran Church. Liz was helped by other 12 Rotary members, from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m., including Rosi Fontana, Linda Crose-Andersen, Rose Serdy, Warren Barmore and Mary Corcoran, who served hot soup and sandwiches. The experience also made clear the most pressing items of clothing that the homeless look for during the rain: socks, raincoats, sweats and gloves. Any members who wish to volunteers items can drop them at Abundant Grace on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Dianne Bobko will post the details in the Foghorn.
Shana also told of the plight of our local homeless community of 17 people, who will soon be moved from behind Safeway in Half Moon Bay (to an as-yet unknown destination) and are asking to be relocated together, as they consider themselves a family. Some of them have been residents of Half Moon Bay for over 40 years who one day lost their homes. Their tents were recently flooded during the rains.
Club Administration
For February 10th, Renée Lewis is organizing a guided tour to see the Elephant Seals at Año Nueno, and she proposes breakfast before or afterwards.
Announcements
John Evans played a fun video of La Louvière, Belgium made by Caroline who was our Exchange Student last year. Her video showed a Rotary party in her hometown of La Louvière to commemorate the 90th anniversary of their local club, District 1620. Caroline also shared that she is studying for her finals. She still thinks of our Rotary Club every day and would like to come back! Paul Wrubel is happily writing a recommendation for her for her application to Medical School.
President’s Message

President Warren announced the following upcoming events:
Monday January 15th, the Interact Ice Skating at Yerba Buena; two hours for a cost of $15.
Next Thursday, January 18th, the speaker will be Megan Edelman of Geo Adventures, who will talk about enriching one’s travel experience.
On Saturday the 27th there will be a District Learning Opportunity, a workshop on Grant Management.
February 3rd is the day scheduled for the International Chair Meeting for the District.
Social Activity
This was lead by Liz Schuck. We were all asked if we had met our last year’s resolutions, from 2017. Each table was then given two written questions to answer and discuss among table companions: What did you do on New Year’s Eve? and Do you make New Year’s resolutions?
Returning to the theme of New Year’s resolutions, president Warren Barmore asked members: What are the 3 things you wish to accomplish in 2018? Irwin Cohen was first to respond, saying he would like to lose weight. Rosi Fontana hoped to become more fit and to stay healthy. Kevin O’Brien wished, in this era of cell phones and email, to see more friends face-to-face. Steve Wilson would love to stay home more often from his work in San Francisco, and to spend more time singing at his choir. Teresa Adam then shared what a longtime hospice nurse has recorded as the top regret of the dying: "I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me."
To close the meeting, President Warren announced the name of the new Rotary campaign to end Polio, “Count Down the History”: in 1979, six million children were vaccinated in the Philippines; today, polio is endemic in only two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
