Program: Allie Sobczak on
HIP HOUSING IN SAN MATEO COUNTY
President Dave Andrews introduced speaker Alie Sobczak, MSW and community outreach specialist for HIP Housing.
HIP Housing has served San Mateo County by providing affordable housing, for about 40 years, or since 1971. Alie listed average home housing costs in the county, such as $2,500/month for a one-bedroom apartment.
She said the HIP programs, funded by the county, promote self-sufficiency, by providing low-cost housing for people who are going for educational and career goals, and she cited single parents or two-parent families among the clientele.
She presented the HIP program of home-sharing, in which HIP matches home providers with home seekers. HIP gathers information from home-seekers, including about lifestyles, pets, or perking needs, which it enters into a  database. HIP also does background checks.

HIP serves as a third-party in matching seekers with providers. When home seekers move in with home providers, there are time blocks of 30 days or more, up to indefinitely, for those involved to see  if the arrangement works. There are no income regulations for the service, she said.
“We think it's a pretty creative solution,” she said.
She said the HIP makes about 700 matches in a year, about 250 of which are new matches, but added the HIP is always seeking home providers.
Bill Johnston asked about an upcoming development in Moss Beach and whether HIP is involved with that? Alie said that they are not involved. She also mentioned that an average monthly rental for HIP runs around $750, and mentioned that rental costs tend to be higher on the Coastside.
Someone asked, what happens when and if a match does not work out? If there are problems, Alie answered, mediation is offered as a solution while HIP tries to help both sides find a more compatible situation. In “roommates from hell” situation, she reminded listeners that the rental situations are relatively brief – for 30 days at a time.
She said that the HIP staff numbers about 25, and covers the county, specifically the Peninsula. Typically, she said, the matches are good situations, and there is ongoing support if things go awry.
Describing typical providers, she said that about 60 percent of providers are seniors who hope to age in place, and are open to arrangements of service exchange. Many, she said, for example, are empty-nesters with an extra room or two in their houses. HIP collaborates with MID-Pen, she said, and also gives references to housing agencies.
In answer to a question, she said that HIP is different from Shelter Network, which is an emergency housing agency. She described herself as a social worker, interested in community work, and said she is originally from the Midwest, and had attended the University of Minnesota. She said she had worked with “villages”-type and partnering housing situations.
She said there is a 10:1 ratio of home seekers to home providers. In answer to a question she said that HIP is funded through property rentals, through the county and through private donations.
She presented calendars that benefit HIP and are illustrated by Peninsula children with the theme of “what home means to me.”
President Dave proudly showed the club that, despite the fact that sloppy joes were served for lunch, his shirt was clean.
Ginger Minoletti gave an update to the club on Dan Bodmann, saying that he was in the hospital again. Many Rotarians want to get in touch with him and send greetings and best wishes.
