Program:  Introducing Liz Schuck, Club President 2016-17

President Elizabeth’s first meeting set an upbeat, lively tone for her presidency to come.
She indicated that some of the things she wanted to do included sharing the history of the club with newer members, and noted that we have a great resource in the club in the form of six members who go back to 1971.

She looked ahead, namely mentioning DG Jeri Fujimoto’s visit to the club which is coming up very soon. She also mentioned shop talks, which she hopes to have regularly at meetings. And she said she hopes to ring the bell at 12:15 each meeting day, to allow time for fellowship during meetings.

Liz started the main program with some  America’s Independence Day Facts --- July 4 was not the official day!
  • Continental Congress voted on July 2, 1776 to approve motion but sent back to committee for revision
  • Document we know as the Declaration of Independence was formally approved by Congress in the late afternoon on July 4th
  • 9 colonies votes in favor  --(2) --- Pennsylvania and South Carolina voted no.   Delaware was undecided and New York abstained.
  • John Dunlap of Philadelphia , a publisher, placed the words . . . “In Congress, July 4, 1776” --- in large type at the top of the first printed version
  • Not actually signed by all members of Congress until August 2, 1776

Liz also recognized that the Moslems are also celebrating – “Eid al-Fitr” – which is on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal – which marks the end of Ramadan.   This holiday was recently celebrated on July 6, 2016
