SHOP TALK - Bill Johnston

Bill Johnston presented his shop talk by showing a family picture with him, his parents, 10 brothers and sisters, with grandchildren and all. Bill is a defense lawyer and married to Ayn of 50 years.
He was born and raised in San Jose where they always had exchange students and guest staying in. He told stories how his father lost his job and take an entry job training job at $600 a month with his large family. At the same time, his mother went back to school and got her Ph.D. His father developed a very successful business.
Bill went to Stanford where men outnumbered women 9 to 1, and he met Ayn there. During their courtship, Ayn announced she was having twins, so they went to school with twins. Ayn's original name was Terry, and she was called Terry so much' she chose Ayn to replace the name Terry.
Bill went to law school for three reasons: 1) help people; 2) not get up too early; and 3) not to be a boss.
Bill joined a firm with the understanding he would become partner after the first year, which he did. He went on to focus criminal behavior where clients are “at their best behavior, family law where clients are often “at their worst behavior, and personal injury.
He told a story where he represented a wrongful death case in which he won which allowed the oldest adult child caring for younger children to purchase a home. This individual later on went to college and graduated.
Bill now does criminal law. He talked about the famous OB/GYN case in Half Moon Bay where the individual was accused of multiple sexual assaults.
He discussed a third case where he represented a drug dealer who he was able to string the case along, so the individual could receive drug treatment and earn the respect of the police establishment that testified on his behalf. This individual is now an electrician.
Bill feels blessed by his career. San Mateo County is the only county in California which does not have a defender’s office so the county contracts with the local Bar Association for legal defense. He enjoys these cases.
