HEAL - Children's Visit

Miss Benson's second grade class from Hatch School walked over to the Portuguese Cultural Center in order to sing the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay a thank you song for donating an outdoor class room for their use at the HEAL Farm in El Granada. The class participates for an hour weekly in the Heal Garden on the Alvin S Hatch Campus. They prep the soil, plant seeds, pull the weeds, tend the plants and harvest the vegetables and the flowers.
Five members of the class of about twenty four students were chosen to address the Rotary Club. Each briefly gave their name and what they most liked about the HEAL program then thanked us. It was a moving tribute especially the song they all sang up in the front of the meeting room. I believe the Song was based on the Tom Paxton song; This World Goes 'Round and 'Round.
Each verse started with the students pantomiming the part of the plant covered such as the roots, stems, leaves, flowers etc. and then singing the verse in unison. It was a wonderful presentation and much appreciated by all present.
The HEAL instructor Miss Cay gave a bit of background and brokered the Question and Answer session from which we learned there was some aversion to handling slugs and snails, that they loved their plants and that some of the children had indeed come to like kale after being introduced to it in the program. Each student was given our Speaker's Gift of a canvas shopping bag with a map of the coast printed upon it. The bags were carried back to Hatch School by their teacher Miss Benson to be distributed at the end of the day. This was to avoid them being lost, used as weapons, filled with found objects, used as hats or other creative uses that surely would have been devised on their six block trek. The weather was fine for a walk out of doors, and the students were enjoying their day on the town.

Happy/Not So Happy News
Caroline Gossart, our Rotary exchange student, shared her last two weeks, which included here whirlwind tour of New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC on a Rotary trip. The trip was too short – but she had a wonderful time seeing so many truly amazing sites! She came home on Saturday, and said her goodbyes on Sunday to Mary and Phil Rogren who have hosted her over the last 4 ½ months. Caroline moved in with her new (and 3rd ) family, the Duboses, who have (5) girls and a Burmese Mountain Dog – and who reside at Ocean Colony. She is truly enjoying having new “sisters”!
In the upcoming weekend, Caroline will be attending “RYLA” – the Rotary Youth Leadership camp – where she will do a ropes course and meet Interact and Rotary exchange students from all over the Bay Area.
Jane Yuster remarked that she is proud of our Rotary club’s participation in Pilarcitos High School’s “Big Coyote” program. This year’s high school students participating in the Big Coyote program mentored Cunha middle school student in the junior Coyote program. Jane was proud to announce that the Cabrillo School District’s Coyote program will receive a J. Russel Kent Award – which spotlights outstanding programs in our San Mateo County public schools.
John Evans shared that he participated as a judge in a gymnastics’ championship event this past weekend in Reno. While in Reno, he was able to visit with Linda Miller in her (and Greg’s) home and together, remembered Greg. John and Larkin’s children grew up with the Millers, and so they were close. Greg is very missed!
Dianne Bobko shared that she entertained long lost relatives of Bo's from Lithuania this week in Half Moon Bay. They first discovered these cousins in 2011 when they went to Lithuania for a Space Conference Bo was participating in. The new found cousins have been close ever since.
Magic of the Coastside – Recap!
Bottom line (after expenses) is still TBD, but monies raised included: Raffle - $4K+; Auction $16K+; Sponsorships $17K+.
Liz was proud to present a check to Amy Bono-Kruckewitt for a donation for the 2nd classroom! Amy showed pictures of the second classroom that is now complete! Amy noted that that having a second classroom doubles the # of students who can visit the farm.
Having a second classroom is particularly important for low income students, who generally cannot attend trips without organized transportation. The HEAL Project helps with the cost of bus transportation to the farm, and particularly for low income schools, but the buses have been half empty given the capacity at The HEAL Project farm. Now, the buses can be full and more students can participate in this incredibly unique experience!
Amy shared that there are multiple volunteer workdays and other opportunities to help with The HEAL Project! Please join The HEAL Project on a workday on May 24 (10:30-12:30). There will also be an open house on June 15.
In addition, there are many other opportunities to volunteer – and particularly on Fridays from 10:00-12:00 during the summer, as there will be many summer camps.
Amy also mentioned that there is an opportunity for all of us to give to The HEAL Project – and our gifts will be matched. Consider The HEAL Project on May 4th – COASTSIDE GIVES. If you particularly give between 4-5PM on May 4th, The HEAL Project gets extra!!!
So what does HEAL stand for? The HEAL Project incubated at Hatch School, and had some founding in Hatch Elementary . . . . etc. but HEAL stands for:
HEALTH Making HEALthy choices about food & fitness to develop lifelong HEALthy habits
ENVIRONMENT Understanding life cycles & ecosystems and developing sound stewardship practices
AGRICULTURE Experiencing the food system and promoting local agriculture
LEARNING Engaging in experiential activities and evidence-based instruction to inform choices and decisions
Our vision is for every child to grow up active, informed, engaged and HEALTHY.
Announcements
Paul Wrubel recently held a hugely successful (no chairs available) event on “How to Pay for College” at Half Moon Bay High School. Paul spent 1 ½ hours explaining the issues surrounding financing college. He noted – 53% of students take 6+ years to graduate (all amounting to huge debt per year!) Parents are spending their retirement futures on funding their students debt -- leaving a huge gap in the baby boomers ability to retire . . .)
Warren Barmore has been approached by the Yacht Club about looking for volunteers to help with water sampling in our creeks . . .
Shana Reilly-Pond, our Community Services director, encouraged Rotarians to attend the Chamber event at Alain Pinel this evening. Relay for Life is featured.
RELAY FOR LIFE will be held on June 3 at the High School – and Shana is calling out for a Rotarian to take the lead to head up a Rotary team! Can you help? Shana is also asking every Rotary member to register for Relay and contribute $100 or the cause! ($100 each means $5000 from Rotary for Relay!)
Renee Lewis shared that “Fighting For our Friends” – for RELAY FOR LIFE – is holding a fundraiser at Nick’s in Pacifica on May 11. There will also be a concert in Redwood City ($40 per person.) And Renee is selling raffle tickets ($10 each, 6 for $50) for Fighting for Friends --- Prizes are amazing!
On other notes, Shana mentioned that the last distribution of dictionaries to third graders will occur on Friday. Thank you all for making this project so much of a success!!
This Saturday, there will be a clean-up at Carter Park – in anticipation of HMB Shakespeare Theater this summer!
Shana also noted that recently, an interfaith breakfast was held to discuss the homeless on the Coastside. Shana noted that many organizations are coming together and pushing forward with considering a hospitality house for the homeless. In the meantime, Shana is interested in pursuing what Rotary can do with Dignity on Wheels to provide showers for the homeless.
This Week in History . . .
111th Anniversary of the San Francisco earthquake . . . Liz encouraged club members to visit Caruso’s Dream – a tribute to Caruso and his affection for San Francisco.
Saturday is Earth Day – started in 1970 . . .
And then . . . Liz told an Easter joke (with the 2nd graders in the room, by the way … .) how to revive a dead Easter bunny: with “HARE” spray . . .
