Program: Judy Macias -
Village of the Coastside (VOTC)
Judy Macias, who was the recipient of our Club's "Service Above Self" Award for 2015, presented the program on the "Village of the Coastside" which she has championed and started here in Half Moon Bay.
Some of the issues facing today's seniors are:
- Technology is big challenge; we lose those skills after retirement. The challenge is where to learn the skills we need to keep up. This is just one of the things VOTC hopes to provide.
- Aging in place is a hot topic; the village concept supports aging in place.
"Villages" started with Beacon Hill. There are 200 Villages in the US, with 200 more in development. The War on poverty provided feeding centers, but most of the funding spent on aging adults, goes to low income. Local Sr. Housing is low income. There are few places on Coast appropriate for for seniors. We can't really downsize here.
VOTC performed a survey - what is already here and what do residents want? 331 responded to the survey, 78% were 55-74. Interest forms have been made available; we are looking for volunteers. People want: exercise programs, speaker series, "how to" workshops, cultural outings, and dining out.
Providing a local solution to a national problem is the goal. VOTC is looking to provide an umbrella of services--one place to find all info. Future anticipated services are transportation, home Maintenance and repair, and technical assistance.
Local supporters: Senior Coastsiders is the fiscal sponsor and space provider (places to meet are scarce around here). The Chamber has been helpful, we are working on a preferred provider list; thanks, Charise. The library also supplies meeting space, and the City of HMB has been very helpful.
The meetings are targeting older adults, 50+ and have drawn 8-30 for meetings; there are 400 on our email list. (There are 10,000 people on the Coastside.). Yes, VOTC is similar to the Village at Home in San Clemente.
So, after two years of organizing, we know we need personal enrichment opportunities, transportation, technology and other educational opportunities and other supportive services. We anticipate Phase One will include lifestyle programs, social, cultural, recreational, and learning opportunities. Also anticipated are a preferred vendors service to access local help, volunteers would be considered first. WE are also considering a concierge service to match member and provider. Providers will be vetted.
Annual cost of membership is anticipated to be about $670 for a single and $900 per couple. Since funding can't come solely from membership, VOTC will need to do fundraising. So far we've participated in the Pumpkin Fest. We also have received financial support from the City of HMB, Senior Coastsiders and individuals.
How can Rotary help? We ask that you do what Rotary does best--support community connection, volunteer. You can increase the quality of life here and support those losing their independence.

- Dave Andrews asked Ed Daniels to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Dan Miller gave the inspiration thought by talking about the 8 days of Hanukkah. The take away theme was having faith, enough lamps, and keeping our thoughts about the latest shooting victims.
- Linda (our exchange student) opened up the meeting with a fundraising presentation for the High School Lady Cougars. For $45 you can drive up to a location to be decided on December 19th and pick up a meal that can serve 4 to 6 people.
- Bonnie Dunham reported that Robin Jeffs is in the hospital and should be coming home in a day or two. No visitors until after the holidays. He is hoping to make the golf tournament in January.

Announcements
- We will be meeting at the Odd Fellow’s site next week.
- There is a Rotary webinar next Thursday. Details were in the FogHorn email we received this week.
Dave's Fun Quiz of the Week – History of how music started. Dave talked about the history of music, and he indicated folk music is the mother of all music. From there classical music was developed with opera and symphony which was not affordable by the general public. From there with all excess instruments in second hand stores, this gave birth to jazz, then the blues and then R&B. As time passed to WWII, we saw big band and the swing. This gave birth to rock and roll by the baby boomers. From there we now see techno music and RAP. He states the mother of all music has retired, but she will return. His question this week was, 'Who were the writers of the following lyrics:
- “Dark destroys the night ……….” The Doors
- “I’m ready to go anywhere …….” Bob Dylan
- “In the shuffling madness of……” Joni Mitchell
- “Rumors spread around ………..” ZZ Tops
- “I want to you to come on ……..” Big Brothers & Holden Co.
- “See what all the others say ……” Jimi Hendrix
- “Evil prince eats a steaming pig .” Frank Zeppelin
