Shop Talk

Article by Steve Wilson

Mike Osborne, formerly of the now-disbanded Larkspur Landing Club, deivered an informative and entertaining shop talk.  His former club was the first Rotary Club to admit women.
Since coming to the Bay Area, he has lived in Corte Madera and Bodega Bay before moving here.

He grew up in Colorado, where his father was a surgeon, attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs (Beta Theta Pi), met and married his wife Deanna there in 1960, then went to medical school at U. of Colorado.   Their first daughter, Elizabeth, was born while Mike was still getting his MD.

In the Vietnam War era, he joined the U.S. Public Health Service and was stationed in Norfolk and Montana (Crow Indian Reservation) before taking a USPHS position in SF.  Mike had by then become a surgeon.  He worked briefly as a ship's doctor for APL in the Pacific, then opened a practice in Marin, where he was attached to Marin General for many years.  He was Treasurer of the Marin Medical Society.

Along the way, his second daughter Katy was born, and both girls were married in 1990.

Happily retired, he now lives in Half Moon Bay and still enjoys golf as well as Rotary.

 CLUB MEETING April 17,  2025

Pledge of Allegiance  - Today's meeting had a colorful start with Kevin waving the stars and stripes for us during the pledge.

Inspirational Thought -  Irwin's thought for the day was a thoughtful tribute to Mother Earth recorded by Carl Sagan.

Guests - Our guests were all spouses:  Doug, Marla and Larkin, who have better attendance records than some of our members.

New Member Induction - New member Sue Pritchard was inducted.  Sue is a retired teacher, mosaic artist and community volunteer who has a number of well-known projects locally, most recently Coastside Hospital, where she is renewing and adding to esixting murals.  Sue grew up in Long Beach, graduated from UCLA and taught mainly in South City for 34 years.

Announcements and News - Ginger and Nancy announced that we still need quite a bit of volunteer help for LobsterFest, and a very active discussion started, continuing after adjournment, about whether to continue, revise or discard some of the revenue events that weren't productive last year.

Ginger pitched giving to our foundation for Coastside Gives.  Renee pitched Relay for Life.   Larkin pitched the Coastal Arts League show (now starting), promoting and benefiting young artists.

Charise shared that her son had been on the scene of a grisly fatal crash in Woodacre and pulled people out of the car, a traumatic experience for those on the scene.

Dianne, Mitone and others reminded those of us who have not yet been through Rotary Youth Protection Training to do so ASAP as failure to complete the training will impede us in having youth participation in our events and also voids Rotary's duty to indemnify in  the event of litigation over unlawful contact.  Dianne can provide step by step direction for how to get on the website to take the test.

Pres. Irwin's Weekly Quiz -

Marble Game - Steve won the drawing but drew a green marble.

Future Meetings - Next week an evening social at San Benito House, 6:00 PM.  May 8 we will have our meeting at the new Mill St. campus of CSM.
